Gurasa Recipe (Traditional Hausa Flatbread)
Gurasa is a popular flatbread from Northern Nigeria, often compared to naan or pita bread. It’s soft, slightly chewy, and perfect as a standalone snack or served with soups and stews.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp sugar
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tsp instant yeast
- ¾ cup warm water
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil or melted butter
Instructions:
-
Activate the Yeast:
- In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar, then sprinkle in the yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
-
Mix the Dough:
- In a large bowl, combine flour and salt.
- Add the frothy yeast mixture and oil. Mix until a dough forms.
-
Knead the Dough:
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1–2 hours, or until doubled in size.
-
Shape the Gurasa:
- Punch down the dough and divide it into small balls. Roll each ball into a round, flat shape about ¼ inch thick.
-
Cook the Gurasa:
- Heat a non-stick pan or griddle over medium heat.
- Place the rolled dough on the hot surface and cook for 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden spots appear. Flip and repeat.
-
Serve:
- Serve warm with soups, stews, or a spicy pepper sauce.
