Gurasa

Gurasa Recipe (Traditional Hausa Flatbread)

Gurasa is a popular flatbread from Northern Nigeria, often compared to naan or pita bread. It’s soft, slightly chewy, and perfect as a standalone snack or served with soups and stews.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp instant yeast
  • ¾ cup warm water
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil or melted butter

Instructions:

  1. Activate the Yeast:

    • In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar, then sprinkle in the yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Mix the Dough:

    • In a large bowl, combine flour and salt.
    • Add the frothy yeast mixture and oil. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the Dough:

    • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
    • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1–2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  4. Shape the Gurasa:

    • Punch down the dough and divide it into small balls. Roll each ball into a round, flat shape about ¼ inch thick.
  5. Cook the Gurasa:

    • Heat a non-stick pan or griddle over medium heat.
    • Place the rolled dough on the hot surface and cook for 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden spots appear. Flip and repeat.
  6. Serve:

    • Serve warm with soups, stews, or a spicy pepper sauce.
